Nancy Pelosi Campaigns for Democrat New Mexico Attorney General Patricia Madrid
Democratic Leader To Tout
Party's Energy Agenda and Campaign for Patricia Madrid
ALBUQUERQUE (AP) August 19, 2006 House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi says the United States must decrease its dependence on foreign oil in part by promoting alternatives like biofuels. The California Democrat will travel here Thursday to campaign for Democrat Patricia Madrid, who is challenging Republican incumbent Heather Wilson for the 1st Congressional District. Pelosi, who spoke by telephone from Nevada on Wednesday, said Albuquerque is one of 23 cities she's visiting this month to promote her party's agenda, called "A New Direction for America.'' She will attend two private fundraising events: one for Madrid and another for the Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee, the fundraising arm of the House. Pelosi said she will focus on the party's energy platform at a joint appearance with Madrid, where they also will talk about rising fuel prices. "Our whole thrust is to send our energy dollars to the Midwest farmers, not the Middle East,'' Pelosi said. Asked what such a focus would mean for New Mexico oil and gas producers, Pelosi said there is still plenty of demand for oil and gas products. "Our dependence on foreign oil is a national security issue and that's an issue for every American,'' she said. "Let's keep our money home.'' Asked about television advertisements run by the Wilson campaign that are critical of Madrid for not taking action against former state treasurer Robert Vigil, Pelosi said she had no knowledge of the kickback scandal. Vigil is set to go to trial a second time Sept. 5 in the public corruption case. "I have complete confidence in the integrity and judgment of Patsy Madrid,'' she said. Pelosi accused Wilson of being "a rubber stamp for the Bush administration.'' She said Wilson "votes the Republican line, which is tax cuts for the rich at the expense of working families in America.'' Wilson's campaign shot back Wednesday. "Nancy Pelosi is a liberal with a liberal agenda and she aggressively recruited Patricia Madrid to run so that they can advance their liberal agenda together,'' said Wilson's campaign manager, Enrique Carlos Knell. |
